September 11th Memorial Statement
Today is September 11th, a date our nation remembers with heavy hearts. It is a day that reminds us of great loss, but also of courage, kindness, and unity. For us here at Gorham High School, this day carries an especially personal meaning. We honor and remember Stephen Ward, a Gorham High School graduate, who lost his life in the September 11th attacks. Each year we speak his name so that his life and his connection to our community are never forgotten.
At the same time, I know many of us are also hurting right now from the tragedies and violence we’ve seen in recent weeks. In moments like these, I’m reminded of the words of Mr. Rogers, who said, ‘When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”’
Today, let us honor Stephen Ward, and all those lost, by choosing to be helpers ourselves—by supporting one another, showing kindness, and remembering that even in the darkest times, light can be found in the care we give each other.
Let’s have a moment of silence to honor Stephen Ward and all those lost and to think about how we can be the helpers that will make our world a better place.
